I would appreciate any information that you can provide re the treatment of sjogrens. My mother, who is 73, has been diagnosed with it recently and has not found any significant relief. Thanks.

Sjogren's Syndrome is a combination of dry eyes, dry mouth and other mucous membranes. As it pertains to the eye, the sole problem relates to a tear deficiency. Since there are currently no methods available to stimulate tear production, treatment is designed to supplement the tears normally produced within the eye, and to limit the amount of tears that drain away from the eye.
Artificial tear solutions in eye drop or ointment form are used to supplement natural tear production. For individuals with Sjogren's, these lubricants must be used several times each day. It is not uncommon for artificial tears to be instilled 20-30 times each day in this setting.
To prevent tear drainage away from the eye, the tear ducts are occasionally blocked with plastic or collagen plugs.
In severe cases of Sjogren's where eye injury can result from severe dryness, a surgical procedure called a tarsorrhaphy can be performed to partially close the eyelids and limit exposure of the eyeball.
All patients with Sjogren's should be under the careful observation of an ophthalmologist.
