I've got a pinguecula on my eyeball that was just diagnosed as such. I'd like to have it removed.

What are the drawbacks or risks of having this entirely cosmetic elective surgery done? The pinguecula does not affect my vision, which is better than 20/20. I just am vain enough to want it removed. Should I leave well enough alone?

If I elect to have it removed, what are the usual results I can expect??

Thanks!

A pingueculum is a harmless accumulation of fatty tissue on the surface of the eyeball. It appears as a small yellow lump at the junction between the white part of the eye (sclera) and the colored part of the eye (iris). Pathologically, it is called "elastoic degeneration".

A pingueculum is never a threat to vision. It can appear to be cosmetically unacceptable. Usually, a pingueculum can be removed without difficulty. The risks include infection, bleeding and scarring. Occasionally, the scar left behind is more unacceptable than the original problem.

There is no medical reason why a pingueculum needs to be removed.
