Are blue blocker sunglasses harmful to vision? Or do they produce any long-term effects altering vision?

Answered by Richard E. Gans, M. D. (reg@ofcn.org)

Blue blocker glasses are not harmful. They are simply a type of tinted lens that contain a filter that blocks ultraviolet and blue wavelengths of light.

There is some evidence that these types of light can cause macular degeneration to worsen in certain "at risk" individuals. There is also some evidence linking UV light and cataract formation. Definitive studies have not been done to provide conclusive data in either of these conditions.
