I would like to know what are the principal (attendible) test for rapid valutation of macular integrity (for example to value the effects of farmacological specific therapy).
Thank you and sorry for my bad english.

There are several tests to determine the integrity of the macula.

The best test to determine the structural integrity and vascular integrity of the macula is a fluorescein angiogram. In this test, a dye, sodium fluorescein, is injected intravenously. A series of photographs is then taken, in rapid succession, to evaluate the blood flow, vascular integrity and structural features of the central retina.

Functional integrity of the macula can be evaluated in many ways. Visual acuity testing is basically a test of macular function. Checking central vision with a grid-like device called an Amsler grid (even graph paper will suffice), one can determine if there is any distortion in the central vision. Color vision testing can determine macular defects. There are computerized visual field tests that can give quantitative analysis of macular thresholds.

All of these tests are routinely performed by ophthalmologists in this country. They are certainly the standard of care in other parts of the world, as well.
