I am a contact lens wearer. My optometrist has suggested that I have a
condition referred to as "Overwearers syndrome". Have you ever heard of this?
She seems to think that less wear is the answer. This is not acceptable to
me. Any suggestions?
I am in good health. The symptoms I am experiencing are poor vision in my
right eye regardless of any change in the prescrption. No pain, alot of
dryness and blurred vision.
Thank you.

Contact lens overwear syndrome is, as the name implies, a condition that comes from excessive contact lens wearing times. In this condition, the contact lens will cause erosions to develop on the front surface of the cornea, or actual warpage of the surface of the eye. Although some of these same problems can result from contact lenses that do not fit properly, most often, they are due to individuals wearing contact lenses longer than their eyes can tolerate them. If excessive wear continues, the individual is at a greater risk of developing vision- threatening complications.
Assuming that the lenses fit properly, the solutions to this condition are limited. Either the individual cuts down on wearing-times or he/she switches to another method of vision correction. Other methods would include glasses, other types of contact lenses or surgical procedures such as RK, PRK, or LASIK.
