Dear Doctor

I am currently considering having the LASIK surgery done. I am concerned about the side effects and any permanent damages that can occur. However, since I can no longer wear any kind of contacts due to GPC, I can only rely on my glasses - which I REALLY hate! I am 22 years old, and a third year medical student in Brisbane, Australia. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yours sincerely

LASIK does not have approval for general use in the United States. Thus, I have never performed the procedure. I am not qualified to give you all of the potential risks and benefits of this refractive surgery procedure.

I will tell you, however, that GPC, giant papillary conjunctivitis has become much less common in this country with the advent of newer contact lens solutions, frequent replacement programs for lenses, and newer medications. You might want to investigate other ways to treat and avoid GPC prior to considering a surgical procedure that has potentially irreversible consequences.
