Please tell me what foods to avoid when you have gout. A couple of nights ago I woke up with my right knee hurting, by the time I go up that morning my knee was about twice the size of the other one. I am 58yrs old and have been having an attack just about every two months, most of the time in my right foot but did have it in my knee once before...thanks

Avoid alcohol, organs meats, meats in general and certain green leafy vegetables.

See a dietitian and/or call your local Arthritis Foundation. They have great support groups and educational brochures.

You may need to confirm the diagnosis of gout by having a family doc, internist or rheumatologist draw out some fluid from an actively inflamed joint. If you are having gout attacks frequently, there are certain medicines (allopurinol and probenecid) that can prevent attacks if taken regularly.
