Rheumatoid arthritis most commonly affects the wrists, elbows, and knees, though feet and ankles are also common. Usually it causes morning stiffness that gets better with activity, unlike osteoarthritis that gets worse with activity. If there are x-ray signs of rheumatoid arthritis usually the RA has been going on for months to years. I recommend calling your local chapter of the arthritis Foundation. They have great handouts, support groups and referral directories.
