I have been diagnosed with simple ovarian cysts. My doctor recommends doing nothing and believes they will go away by themselves. I have had them before and my previous obgyn gave me birth control pills which got rid of them. Because I would like to get pregnant at this time I understand that taking the pill would defeat my purpose. My question is, will getting pregnant raise the right hormone levels to get rid of the cysts in the same way taking the pill would, if not will getting pregnant just aggravate this condition?

Answer--

A cyst is a structure filled with fluid, like a water balloon. If they are small, and the sonogram shows they have benign characteristics (that is non- cancerous), they can be watched and checked periodically. Since the ovaries are filled with minute cysts ( the follicles), they are not unusual, and they grow under the influence of the body's hormones. Since birth control pills and other substances block those hormones, they can be used to control ovarian cysts. Pregnancy can at the beginning can make cysts grow, but in general they become dormant during pregnancy, but they can recur afterwards. Anyway, there is no reasons why a patient with small benign ovarian cyst should not attempt pregnancy. As always your doctor knowing your medical history and the likely cause of the cysts, should be able to advise you on the best course of action.
