Our granddaughter is 11 months old and recently switched from formula to whole milk and developed a very bad diaper rash. Would the cause be the milk or something else? All other factors seem to be the same as before the rash. Also what would be the best treatment for the rash? Our daughter tried a baking sode paste but it seemed to irritate the rash even more.

thank you

Answer --------------------------

It is unlikely that a simple change from formula to milk would be the sole cause of a diaper rash. If the formula was soy-based, there will be a difference in the digestive process when ingesting cow milk, and some changes could occur in stooling, which could then cause skin irritation.

A red, very irritated rash in the diaper area which will not respond to ordinary measures should be checked for monilia (candida), a yeast-like organism. That type of rash responds best to specific medication, usually something like mycostatin.
