I have an 11 year old boy who has recently notices a "bum" under his right nipple. It moves around and is not tender. Should I be concerned? That was bump not bum, I don't know how to edit the text.
Answer ----------------------
A small "bump" under the nipple in a pre-adolescent or adolescent male is anxiety-provoking but usually benign. It is usually caused by a small amount of breast tissue beneath the areola, which surrounds the nipple. Often the enlargement is unilateral (under one side only). Most important, the enlargement is usually transitory, and lasts only a limited period of time. If every other aspect of development appears normal (i.e.normal male development for age of secondary sexual characteristics), there should be no reason for excessive concern. The child should be examined by his physician to assure that everything else is OK.
